GSV MainBay II by MarkJayBee GSV MainBay II by MarkJayBee
Mandelbulb 3D v1.8.2 [link]

DEcombinate in Min mode using: SphereHeightMapIFS/SierpHilbert (x2)/_reciprocalX3

With all the new features and formulas in M3D, I thought I'd try
to create a more 'constructed' view of a mainbay in one of SF
master Iain M. Banks's humungous 'Culture' GSV ships.
Think this one works much better than my previous attempt! :ashamed: ;)

Wow. This is one of those pictures where you have to take a moment to let your eyes drink it all in. Very impressive.

Reading Banks' science fiction (I'm currently enjoying my first immersion in Use of Weapons), your imagination does get a thorough work out. Putting images to worlds/species/ships/people/etc. can be challenging, but I think you've nicely evoked the sense of scale and the awesome feel that descriptions of the GSVs and suchlike impart.

Thanks for your kind comments Steve! :aww:  It was a very sad day
last year when the news of Iain M. banks's demise was received. We shall
never see his like again; but his work was so unique and multi-layered that
it bears multiple rereads. I'm now back to his excellent 'Excession', which
tempts me even more to get to grips with 'proper' 3D modelling software,
and get something decent and worthy rendered. Watch this space I guess....;)

Actually, if you're interested :iconcapstoned: did a wee anim of this, check
out the link at:

You're right about Banks, minds like that only ever come in ones. At least he left behind such a rich body of work.

Speaking of which, I've had the pleasure of reading Excession also - I look forward to seeing what it inspires you to do...

Speaking of which, yes I liked what Capstoned has done with it. That idea of a cavernous bay open to space works nicely for me.

That's pretty impressive.
Thanks for rendering Culture images!
(thank you to all who do contribute. I can't draw to save my life)

Thanks very much! Yup, there does seem to be a bit of a dearth of quality 'culture' related artwork on dA.

I thought Matter and Surface Detail [ [link] ] were well worth a second read; but with Use Of Weapons that second read is almost mandatory. There are many similarities between Surface Detail and UoW, so anyone who liked one should enjoy the other. As for this render, it's so like the GSV ship bay described in Consider Phlebas that I felt as if I'd been on board myself, looking at it.

Thanks very much for your comments.:) I'm actually rereading 'Consider Phlebas' for the 3rd time. I'm in the process of boning up on C4D, with a view to rendering scenes from Banks's books as 'real' 3D images at some point in the - not too distant! - future. :plotting:

The Culture needs a talent worthy of its achievements; someone who can do justice to the epic scenes and dramatic moments.

This is what I had in mind while reading the culture novels when inside the GSV's docks.
